Today I’m going to be reviewing NYX’s Felt Tip Liner in Extreme Black. My normal staple when it comes to eyeliner is from Smashbox, but when mine ran out I decided to try something a bit different (and cheaper!) to review. I’d heard good things about NYX’s products, lip products especially, so I thought their eyeliner must be good too, right? Wrong.
I hate to start my first beauty review as a negative one, but I’m really disappointed with it. My first impression when I swatched in on my hand is that it’s not black. It’s not even slightly black. I mean, I hate to sound like Borat, but…it’s not black. It’s blue. Who was in charge of calling it ‘Extreme Black’?!
As you can see from the pictures below, the first, thinner line is applying a normal amount of pressure, and the bottom line is me really pressing hard, which, I don’t particularly want to do on my eyelids! (Not to mention is very tricky, and that’s how you poke an eye out). The bottom one looks slightly blacker, but there’s no way to actually achieve that on your eyelid where the surface is a lot softer.
This made the application actually very hard on the eyelid itself. It’s very difficult to get enough out of it to make it look like you aren’t wearing a navy felt liner that’s too old and faded. Even when you try to go over it a couple times, it seems as though nothing else will come out.
Once your eyes are completely done, it doesn’t look too bad, but if you’re wanting a black eyeliner you’ll be disappointed. It’s alright as a navy blue liner, but I’m sure there are probably better ones out there. If you’re looking for a soft, navy liner, then this is probably right up your street, but you’re probably unlikely to purchase a liner which describes itself as ‘Extreme Black’ thinking “Oh yeah this will be more blue than black”. They also have a shade in Jet Black – if the flow of the liquid was good and it was just the colour that was off, I’d be more tempted to try this one.
Saying that, it is fairly long wearing and doesn’t run, so it’s not all bad, but I don’t think I’ll be buying this again. It cost £8.00 so it’s not the most expensive out there, but considering it doesn’t do what it says on the tin (literally), I’d rather pay a little bit more and get a better one, or at least have one that’s actually black!
My quest for the perfect eyeliner continues! Leave me a comment with products I should try next!
