As I get older, I find myself trying to cling onto my youth more than I ever have before. When I was younger I couldn’t wait to be older and have my independence, and there are so many things I would love to tell my younger self now, so I thought I’d write a few of them down. But knowing her, she probably wouldn’t listen.
Stop caring about what people think of you. If anyone tries to bring you down, just remember that they don’t matter.
Stop trying to please people. Do anything for the people you love, but don’t try to satisfy the people who wouldn’t do the same for you.
Speak up. You have a voice. Use it, and be confident in your thoughts and opinions.
Be smarter with money. You’ll learn only too late that material possessions won’t make you happy.
Enjoy your youth. Stop wishing the time away because it goes too quickly and you’ll look back wondering where the last ten years went.
Say yes more often. Don’t be afraid of the unknown and take some chances. It’s better to regret the things you do rather than the things you didn’t do.
Try everything twice – once to see if you like it, and a second time to make sure you weren’t doing it wrong the first time.
Be careful who you trust. Few people will actually care about you, the rest are just curious. You’ll trust the wrong person at least once, but if there’s a lesson learnt then there isn’t a loss.
Listen to what your parents tell you, but only sometimes. They will try to guide you from their experience, but only you know your own mind, so go with your gut.
Think about the future. Enjoy being young, but you need to think about saving for your future house, and a career path which will bring out the best in you.
Don’t take yourself too seriously, but you are the only person who is allowed to make a joke of yourself. Laughter is the best medicine.
Take care of your skin. Take care of your body and your mind. It’s the only one you have and if you fail it, it will fail you.
Cut toxic people out of your life. If the people you surround yourself don’t bring out the best in you, then they do not deserve to be in your life. Don’t stand for any shit.
Know when you need to put yourself first. Your health and your sanity are the most important thing.
Learn how to say no. Stand up for yourself. Don’t do anything you don’t want to do.
You’ll get your heart broken more than once, so you need to learn how to love yourself when no one else does.
Learn how to deal with criticism and rejection. You’ll only fail if you let it stop you.
It’s never too late.
